Winemaker of the Year: We turn our attention to this medium sized Sonoma County winery, which is producing some of the best value, quality varietals in California, from its Sonoma Valley Zinfandel to its wonderful single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. We detail nine elements that have helped this winery thoroughly upgrade its wines and its reputation.

Wine Reviews: 149 recommended wines. Highlights include several outstanding fortified wines (Madeiras and Portos); the first Chardonnay release from HdV; seven excellent 1999 Cabernets; a terrific $7 (retail/bottle) Central Coast Pinot Noir; fine new releases from Argentina; great values from Chile & Italy; and several New Zealand white wines.
